2003 Millennium Early
Bird Tournament
Sponsored by Diamond
Star Sports
Coors Light of Parsippany, NJ went undefeated to capture its
third Millennium Early Bird title in the last four years. Led by
left-fielder and power hitting James “JP” Amendolaro (23-33,
.697 avg, 9 HRs, 28 RBIs) who was named tournament MVP, the
Coors Light squad won eight straight games. They beat Richmond
Softball 42-0 & 27-3 and also beat Tom n Jerry's Hitmen 37-5
& 18-3 in bracket play to finish with a +113 run
differential which gave them the number one seed in elimination
play. After a week delay because of rain, the elimination play
saw Coors Light jump all over Parts Plus by a 21-8 score. They
then got by Sam's Bar & Grill (Renaissance Marble) 11-4.
They got revenge of the team that defeated them last year in
Little Brown Jug, as they rolled to a 17-7 victory. Next up was
last year's champion, Mel's Pub. Coors light won handily 25-20.
In the losers bracket, J&B eliminated Brown Jug 20-8, then
came back from six runs behind in the seventh inning to pull out
a 27-25 victory over Mel's Pub and eliminated them. They then
had to defeat Coors Light twice to claim the crown. Both teams
agreed it was getting late and decided to end the affair by
splitting the money in an agreed amount by both teams. The
leading hitters of the Coors Light team were Paul Carifi (26-35,
.743 avg., 25 runs scored, 12 doubles), Mike Stevens (25-35,
.714 avg., 27 RBIs, 25 runs scored), Joe Limeira (22-29, .759
avg., 19 RBIs) and Brian Stanton (20-25, .800 avg., 18 runs
scored).

2002 Millennium Early
Bird Tournament
Tom n Jerry's/Mel's Pub out of both the Norristown and
Radnor Leagues went undefeated to capture the third annual Millennium Early
Bird Tournament. Managers Marty and Paul Murray had the Mel's crew ready to play
this weekend after last weekend's disappointing 4th place finish in Norristown. The winners were led by Joe Povenski who walloped 16 home runs in
the seven games that Mel's played. These weren't over the fence homers, they
were all hit on open fields which makes this figure so astonishing. As far back
as the outfielders were playing, he still either beat them or hit his usual
tracers through the gaps. He was hitting balls over and through obstacles,
parking lots, buildings and even bases on the other fields that weren't even
mentioned in the ground rules due to the absurdity of the distance involved.
But, as has been his trademark over the last couple years, Big Joe did not
disappoint, he looks beyond the opposing outfielders and aims for other
townships. Also leading Mel's were outfielders Clarke Farrell and Paul 'Reds'
Meara who combined to go 34 for 38 on the weekend. These two legends were
unstoppable. Tom McLaughlin, Jamie Ritter, Johnny Brooks, Dick Moody, Danny
Helm, Jack "The Rattler" Mullin, Bobby Watters and Jerry Dugan also
played key roles in the championship. Mel's Pub got to the finals by defeating
Preferred Sportswear, Sweeny's Pub Bombers and then Little Brown Jug in the
semi-finals. KDJ from Linden, NJ went 2-1 in their bracket losing only to, you
guessed it, Tom n Jerry's/Mel's Pub. KDJ got the finals by defeating A&A
Pizza from Scranton, Last Call of the Millennium League and Renaissance Marble
of Blackwood, NJ in the other semi-final. Leadign hitters for KDJ were Jason
Stagich (18-22, .818, 1 HR, 16 RBIs), John Olsen (17-23, .739, 3 HRs, 17 RBIs)
and Craig Palmer (19-26, .731, 4 HRs, 26 RBIs). Tied for third place were Renaissance
Marble from Blackwood, NJ who defeated parlycardcard.com and then a tough Tal
Mar, Inc. team also from New Jersey (Cherry Hill) in the quarter finals. The
other team tied for third was the Little Brown Jug/TPS contingent from
Norristown who defeated the G-Men and then two time tournament champion Coor's
Light/Peerless Beverage in another quarter final. Coor's Light beat the Jug on
Saturday to win their bracket only to see their fortunes reversed the following
day. They are a classy bunch of players and make any tournament they enter that
much better. Coor's Light tied for fifth with Last Call, Tal Mar, Inc., and
Sweeny's Pub Bombers. Once again tournament director Joe Organek put on a nice
display of softball and showcased Delaware County softball at it's finest.

Danny Curran Memorial Co-Ed Softball Tournament on Sunday. The semifinals
produced a Duke vs. Duke matchup (sounds like the financial firm from the movie
"Trading Places") and the Red Lantern vs. Willowbrook Pub.Duke's II
won their semifinals game by the score of 9-8 over Duke's I, as Mare Curran, who
was last years tournament MVP, took her team into the championship game once
again. In the other semifinal game, the Willowbrook Pub, managed by Jerry Dugan,
defeated Red Lantern 7-4, to advance to the finals. In the championship game,
Willowbrook Pub scored in the early innings on their way to a 13-4 victory over
Duke's II to win the championship.Biz Curran, from Duke's I, was named the MVP
of the tournament. The tournament featured some of the best women's softball
players not only from Delco, but also from the state and national level as
players from Appco's/Dukes Tavern, the 2003 ASA of PA Open Class State
Champions, Max Magee's Pub, the 2002 ASA National Class "B" Champion
and the Red Lantern Flames, who had won the Daily Times/Exelon Champs 'n'
Charity Classic four straight years from 1999-2002, participated in the
tournament. On the men's side there were also many familiar names from the
softball circuits. They all came out on a perfect fall weekend, with their
friends to play in a Co-Ed Softball Tournament, where all the proceeds benefited
the Danny Curran Scholarship Fund. After seeing the camaraderie among the teams
and the amount of talent they exhibited in playing together, a summer Co-Ed
Softball League in Delaware County (with a limited schedule) played one night a
week, may not be too far off in the future. It would be nice for a team from the
ASA of Pa, District 6, to compete for a state and/or national championship. The
party after the bracket games were completed on Saturday, at the Willowbrook Pub
was a lot of fun. Between the exceptional buffet that the Pub's manager, Anthony
DeVico, put out for everyone and the large array of prizes that were available
with the purchase of raffle tickets, it was a perfect way for this segment of
the Delaware County softball community to celebrate and once again show their
support for a charitable softball tournament. Everyone who was involved in
putting together this tournament, would like to thank all the players and fans
for their generous contributions, whether by buying t-shirts, raffle tickets,
supporting the concession stand, donating prizes for the raffle or by making a
donation of any kind.
I know that Dan and Mare Curran and their family would
especially like to thank everyone for making this tournament and the "Danny
Curran Scholarship Fund" a huge success.
